Geocam

Device that attaches to the bottom of a camera located in the cupola of the ISS.

When an astronaut takes a photo of the earth this device simultaneously takes two photos of the inside of the cupola, capturing fiducials located along the windows and creates a timestamp correlating with the camera’s photo. This allows the team to know exactly what vector the camera was pointed in relation to the ISS, and at what time. Taking into account the location of the ISS at that time it is then possible to determine where on the Earth the photo is within a very small margin.

This has passed all of NASA’s launch and ISS certification tests including:

  • Shock and vibe - for violent launch conditions

  • Fire

  • EMI

  • Egress
